Back-to-School in Korea: Learning, Growing, and the Power of Play

March marks the start of the school year in Korea. Across the country, students eagerly prepare to return to school with new teachers, new classmates, and new opportunities to learn. For many children, this season means buying a new backpack, preparing school supplies, and putting on a school uniform for the first time.

For children growing up in Korea’s social welfare system, however, these everyday items often require additional support.

Supporting a Fresh Start

This year, 10 students at one of our partner children’s homes are beginning a new stage of school. They include:

  • 1 student entering elementary school
  • 4 students entering middle school
  • 5 students entering high school

These students need help purchasing backpacks and school supplies for the new school year.

In addition, two students entering high school require school uniforms, which are required for most schools in Korea and can be costly for children’s homes to provide.

Our goal is to raise ₩1,700,000 (about $1,275 USD) to ensure these students can begin the school year prepared and confident.

Starting the school year with the right supplies can make a meaningful difference. New backpacks, uniforms, and school materials help students feel ready to participate in class and begin the year with confidence. Even a small gift can help a student start the school year feeling prepared, confident, and supported.

Why Play Matters Too

This year, another important need emerged. Over the past year, several infants and toddlers arrived at one of the homes we support, creating a growing need for a safe indoor play space designed for early childhood development.

Play is far more than fun. It is how young children explore their world, build confidence, and develop cognitive and emotional skills.

As Albert Einstein once said, “Play is the highest form of research.”

The playroom will include developmental toys, movement activities, and comfortable seating designed specifically for young children. Planned items include sensory toys, bouncing toys that support motor development, soft seating areas, and a play ball pit where children can safely explore and learn.

The total cost of the playroom equipment is ₩2,552,670 (about $1,915 USD).

How You Can Help

This year’s campaign supports two important needs:

교육

  • Backpacks and school supplies for students beginning the new school year
  • School uniforms for two high school students

Early Childhood Development

  • Developmental toys for infants and toddlers
  • Safe indoor play equipment
  • A playroom designed for young children

Your support helps ensure children have the resources they need to learn, grow, and simply be kids. Together, we can help them start the school year prepared and create spaces where childhood can flourish.
